Holy, A colurful game of Divinity
HOLI
A COLORFUL GAME OF DIVINITY
Have you ever thought about your colorful body? What is the color of your skin, what is the colour of your blood? what is the color of your bone? You may find our body is nothing but colors. Like this body whole world is contained with colors. You can find the similarities of the world and the body. Because all are made of Prakriti. Prakriti has three gunas- sattwa, rajas and tamas. Sattwa is white, Rajas is red, and Tamas is black. The first evolutes of Prakriti, mind, is also made of three gunas. The mind is like a crystal but when the white color or sattwa is predominates in that crystal mind then you feel peace, love, compassion and so on. When your mind becomes rajasic you feel very active, perhaps angry, and when your mind is covered with tamasic darkness, then you become slothful, sleepy. The color very much affects the mind. But we do not see from where in the mind all the color takes birth. To see the color of mind is one of the greatest achievement in spirituality. The colors of the mind are the only hindrance to going deep inside the mind. Samadhi is a state of colorlessness because it is beyond all the emotions and feelings. But the colors contain emotions. Our stillness in meditation breaks because the mind is changing its color all the time. The colors are given to us to play with but Divinity does not play with them. Divine plays intensively where there are no colors. It makes it's playground in the mind, when it leaves it's colors behind.
In the rainy season when you see the Indradhanu (rainbow) on the sky you look eagerly for hours and hours and you wonder who painted the sky with seven colors? But you never really looked this beautiful colorful world. The world that you think real is not true but is a great painting, and God the Divine force is the only painter of it. You use colors to make a painting but God uses it's maya shakti. Our mind is a part of Maya shakti, through which we can make a colorful world mentally in a second. The home that you built exists in your mind like a big banyan tree exists in potential form in a tiny seed. The color that you choose to paint your home also exists there. The color of the dress that you like also is there. The problem is there when we attach to the color outside. Once you go deep and see what color your mind is, then you can go above the dualities and confusion of your life.
Do you see the colors in your voice when you talk or in someone else's voice when you listen? It is also colorful. Because the word that we utter is not coming from our tongue only. It starts from the Muladhara Chakra. The Kundalini shakti is the source of energy in our body by which all things are going on. The word comes through four stages- Para, Pashyanti, Madhyama, and Vaikhari. The Para vani (Word that is God) stays in Muladhara. Pasyanti is in Anahata and Madhyama is in Vishuddha chakra. The Vaikhari is on your tongue, Jihvaamula. When the energy flows from the Muladhara to the tongue, it comes through the chakras and all the chakras are vibrating with colors. In that way if we go deep only we can see a colorful world where Divinity is playing a great miraculous game.
All full moons are auspicious in every culture of the world. In India, on each full moon day we have different kind of celebration. They are actually scientific and philosophical and are very much related to astrology, weather, and many other factors. These festivals do not work superficially but penetrate to the inner soul and the subtle body. The yogis and the seers of the Himalayas experienced the subtle vibrations in those special days.
Significance of Holi
This fullmoon day is called "Phalguna Purnima".
1.Colors save the skin-
At this time in India a great change in the weather occurs. The cold season has ended and the summer is standing ready to offer its fire to the earth. In India it gets very hot. How does one feel if s/he moves from an air conditioned room to a heated room? So much physical and mental strain and disease may occur. At Holi when the herbal colors are put on (or smeared on) they help protect the skin.
2.Holi for happiness-
We are so serious in our life because all the time we are busy in working, earning money, and generally have a somewhat selfish attitude. All those thoughts and impressions arise from all of this and they create the blockages in our mind. Until it is released we suffer in many ways. Mind needs fun, happiness and joyfulness. To be happy one should depart sometimes from all serious activities. And we should have a sankalpa to gain the happiness that we miss from our life. If we do a sankalpa like, "I will be happy all the time," then Divinity is bound to provide us the happiness we want. Many have not even a thought of joy and fun. That's the problem. The celebration itself does not give nearly as much happiness as the sankalpa of Holi to play and enjoy gives. People become happy just hearing that Holi is coming in a week or a month.
3.Samadhi is a celebration-
What happens when you remember God? A devotee remembers God's name to get his Darshana. When one is not enjoying remembering Divinity one can not enjoy when God himself appears. Because the remembrance contains a samkalpa or resolution. All the spirituality, yoga, success, business, good lives are dependent on sankalpa, that's the root of all celebrations. In Sanskrit the source is called "UTSA" and celebration is called UTSAVA". Both come from the same root. The celebration of holi gives a new life to our happiness so that it should grow and grow until it reaches the final ecstasy of Samadhi. Samadhi can not be obtained in the world of sorrow and pain. It exists in the world of "Ananada", bliss. Ananda is one of the names of Brahman.
4.Holi brings blissful state-The celebration of Holi tells us how to get this blissful state that needs to be discussed-
5. Holi is also the celebration of friendship and of ending disputes in relationships-
If one has many enemies and opponents how can one be peaceful? The mind always will be busy thinking about them and will be fearful of being attacked. On this day everyone is free to put colors to anyone else and that play of colors makes them friendly towards each other. So on this occasion, if you dislike or hate anyone, write a letter to him or her if it is difficult to talk directly and to play colors. Swamiji always says to see the fault in us first. He suggests to do eleven Gayatri if any critical or judgemental thoughts or emotions arise towards someone. If you do not want to give them letter, just write it for yourself and beg forgiveness and you will be excused by your own conscience. In this way Holi is the celebration of restoring friendship, not only with others, but with ourselves.
6.Holi is the celebration of openings-
In our (Indian) society we have different castes and classes of people. Because of it many people have the feeling of inferiority and superiority. This stops the progress of society and creates imbalance. In this day everybody comes to one platform and plays together putting color each other, hugging each other, feeding each other sweets, and enjoying each other's company. In this day everybody forgets their selfish individuality and the things that divide them like caste, creed, religion, age and so on. Even Guru puts colors to his disciples, the father to the son. There is no feeling of elder and younger. It opens the peoples' hearts. This is the celebration of opening.
Vrindavan, the abode of holi: Holi is greatly celebrated in Vrindavana, the place of Lord Sri Krishna. Sri Krishna is the colorful, beautiful and loving incarnation of Divinity. He enjoyed all the colors of life without becoming attached to them. His teachings are also to perform all the duties and enjoy life without having attached.
THE SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPORTANCE OF COLORS
Not only the physical body vibrates with the colors but all around the body we have a colorful auras. The auras are the light. That light creates colors. Without light the colors can not exist. Like when the sun light goes through the crystal prism it creates seven colors. In that way when the light of Atman goes through the crystal prism of mind it radiates many colors in the form of the body and auras.
We see many colors, but originally there are three colors blue, green and red. All others are the mixture of these three. In Ayurveda we have three Doshas- Vata, pitta and Kapha which are also much effected by the colors. These colors have there own importance like the blue gives peace and cure the disease caused by pitta. The Green provides stillness and purifies the nadis. The red increase the blood pressure and activates the mind and make the person healthy and strong. The other colors like orange are related to Sun which gives energy and increases intelligence. So renunciates wear orange robes. Yellow color develops our conscience, intelligence and creativity. The radiations of yellow activate the mind and nadis. So celibate brahmacharis use the yellow clothes. The indigo color develops a high attitude. The violet color increases the thrust for spiritual liberation. The white color brings purity and coolness.
The color therapy works in this way. The ancient Rishis, in the form of Holi celebrate that they want to make the whole of humanity happy and healthy.
May the Holi brigns you a new hope to reach the fianal attainment.
May the colors of the holi lead you the state of colorlessness.
Many many wishes to you all.
