Swami Veda Bharati
Swami Veda Bharati has spent the past 58 years teaching and providing spiritual guidance around the world. He was raised in the five-thousand-year-old tradition of Sanskrit-speaking scholar-philosophers of India, and has taught the Yoga-sutras of Patanjali from the age of nine and the Vedas from the age of eleven. Author of the most comprehensive commentary on Patanjali's Yoga-sutras and many other books, Swami Veda is a poet, scholar, research guide and international speaker par excellence.
All of his knowledge has come intuitively, and he has attained the highest academic degrees, B.A. (Honors) (London), M.A. (London), Dr. Litt. (Holland), all between June 1965 and 1967. In 1969, he met his Spiritual Master, Swami Rama, and was initiated into one of the highest paths of Dhyana-yoga.
He has studied and is well-versed in the scriptures of all religions, understands 17 languages with varying degrees of fluency, which allows him to teach meditation to people of different faiths - Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs - from within their own scriptural and meditative traditions. As he is familiar with all known meditative traditions and the different schools of eastern and western philosophies, the Buddhists are given Buddhist mantras, the Christians are guided in accordance with the rich Christian meditative and contemplative traditions, and so forth. Upon meeting him, one is immediately aware that one is in the presence of an extraordinary person who has incorporated spirituality into his daily life, one who can speak with authority and depth about a person's relationship to others, to the events of daily life, and to God.
Before taking his vows of Swamihood in 1992, he was known as Dr. Usharbudh Arya. A prolific writer and speaker, he is the author of numerous books, including Super conscious Meditation, Mantra and Meditation, Meditation and the Art of Dying, Philosophy of Hatha Yoga, God, Sayings, and Yoga-sutras of Patanjali. Swami Veda Bharati's teachings have traveled to over 33 countries, touching people on six continents. He has led meditations in 17 languages. His ability to unite those from such differing backgrounds lies in the practice of a spirituality that is beyond religion, culture, language, status, and education.
Swami Veda Bharati is recognized as a scholar of extraordinary depths and author of many books, including the comprehensive commentary The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Volumes I and II. He received his B.A. (Honours, London), M.A. (London), and Doctorate (Holland) and, while a professor at the University of Minnesota, the Distinguished Teaching Award.
Since then, he has been guiding thousands worldwide in the purest and most ancient path of subtler, lesser known aspects of the Himalayan tradition of meditation.
Swami Veda Bharati is a close disciple of H.H. Swami Rama, who demonstrated delta brain waves while conscious to scientists at the Menninger Foundation, which Swami Veda has replicated in a scientific laboratory.
For over half a century, Swami Veda has also dedicated himself to various humanitarian efforts, including education, creating self-sustaining villages for people with leprosy and their families, and, most recently, opening an institute for meditation and interfaith studies.
His work with the World Parliament of Religions and the United Nations World Council of Religious Leaders has led to presentations on both practical and timely topics, such as education and parenting for peace and spirituality in business.
His openness, depth of calm, and insight are rare. His way of teaching is personal, practical, and direct. His deep joy and spontaneity make him an engaging speaker.
